Phone or bag left in DiDi or a taxi in China
Start with how the ride was booked. An app order, a street-hailed taxi and a hotel-arranged car have different evidence trails; the vehicle's appearance alone is rarely enough.
For an app-booked ride
Return to the original app or mini-program, open the relevant trip and look for help or lost-item support. Menu wording varies. Keep the order, route, date, fare and vehicle details privately. Ask support to contact the driver through that trip, rather than relying only on an old masked number.
For a street-hailed or arranged car
Use the receipt to identify the taxi company. Without it, collect payment time, fare, pickup and drop-off points and any vehicle details you actually remember. If a hotel or booking service arranged the ride, ask it to trace the dispatch. Shanghai's official rules provide a local receipt-based reporting example, not a nationwide guarantee.
If the booking phone is lost
Use an authorized account-recovery route or the platform's official support. Supply a different reachable number and email; do not give a helper your password or SMS codes. Keep the inquiry factual—an unanswered call does not establish that the driver kept the item.
Agree on a safe return
After a match is confirmed, clarify where the item is, who will hand it over and any agreed return costs. If abroad, check local collection before discussing export. Keep written records and report suspected theft or extortion to the appropriate authorities rather than confronting anyone.
