Avoid scams when recovering lost belongings in China
People searching for a valued item are easy to pressure. Slow down any request for money, account access or identity documents until you have verified who is asking.
Look past the logo
A message can copy an airport or device-maker's branding. Open the organization's official site independently and verify the reference there. A read receipt, a familiar photo or a convincing chat profile does not establish that the sender holds your item.
Keep security secrets out of the process
Do not provide passwords, device unlock codes or one-time verification codes. Apple says it will not contact you to announce that a device was found. An instruction to remove a lost phone from its account should be treated as a serious warning sign.
Separate proof from payment
Verify the physical item and legitimate collection conditions before discussing a fee. Ask for written scope, recipient identity and refund terms. Do not pay just because a stranger threatens an immediate disposal deadline; check any deadline with the actual holding office.
If you already shared information
Stop further disclosure, preserve messages and transaction records, and contact the affected bank or account provider through its official channel. Use its recovery procedure and report suspected fraud to the appropriate authorities. Be wary of a second person demanding a fee to recover money from the first scam.
