CHINA LOST ITEM GUIDE

Lost Something in China? A Practical Guide for Travelers

Lost-property systems in China are often effective, but each railway, metro, airport, taxi platform and venue has its own process. Acting quickly and keeping precise journey records gives staff the best chance of matching your item.

What to do in the first 30 minutes

  1. Tell nearby staff immediately and ask for the lost-property desk.
  2. Save tickets, booking records, ride receipts and screenshots before they disappear from an app.
  3. Write down the time, route, carriage, seat, terminal, vehicle plate or exact location.
  4. Keep photos and a private list of unique contents; do not publish sensitive identifiers publicly.

Choose the place where you lost it

🚄

Train or metro

Keep the train number, departure date, carriage and seat. For metro journeys, record the line, direction, entry and exit stations and approximate time.

  1. Contact the station or operator serving the journey.
  2. Describe the item, bag contents and where it may have been left.
  3. Ask for a case or storage reference and the collection deadline.
✈️

Airport or airline

Responsibility may differ between the terminal, security checkpoint, airline, lounge and ground transport. Identify the last place you definitely had the item.

  1. Record airport, terminal, flight and seat details.
  2. Contact both the relevant airport desk and airline when uncertain.
  3. Do not send passport or payment-card images unless an official channel requires them.
🚕

Taxi or ride-hailing car

A booking record, pickup/drop-off time, vehicle plate and driver contact channel are especially valuable. Avoid contacting an unknown driver outside the official platform.

  1. Report the item inside the taxi or ride-hailing app first.
  2. Preserve the trip ID, receipt and vehicle details.
  3. Arrange collection at a safe, agreed location after the item is confirmed.
🏨

Hotel, restaurant or attraction

Contact the exact department or venue and describe the date, table, room, tour or ticket. Large sites may have separate security and lost-property offices.

  1. Ask staff to check housekeeping, security and the lost-property log.
  2. Request written confirmation, a reference number and holding deadline.
  3. Confirm what proof and authorization a collector must bring.
